Bank of England launches task force to explore a ‘digital pound’; central bank digital currency would rival private crypto channels vulnerable to laundering

The Bank of England has confirmed that it will explore the idea of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) to complement the Pound Sterling.

If it goes ahead, it would be a government-controlled, publicly backed rival to traditional private cryptocurrencies like diem and bitcoin.
