VATICAN: Holy See’s internal systems open to ‘abuse’ by senior figures, but state still comes away from MONEYVAL assessment with higher rating – one of only five countries to do so

It is still possible that the Vatican’s internal systems can be “abused” for personal benefit by its mid-level and senior figures, the Council of Europe has said.

A report from the Council’s anti-money laundering body MONEYVAL notes that authorities have not addressed this vulnerability in full – despite some recent high-profile corruption cases which have seen the state’s reputation slide.
