FRENCH regulator Violaine Clerc was today unveiled as the new FATF Executive Secretary.
Ms Clerc comes to the international position with more than 25 years experience in prudential, AML and CFT supervision through positions at the French Central Bank and French financial supervision authority (ACPR).
She previously served as a member of the AML standing committee of the three European supervisory authorities, as well as a senior member of the French delegation to FATF. She was co-chair of the Evaluation and Compliance Group of the FATF for eight years.
FATF said Ms Clerc takes the lead at an “important time,” as FATF “works to regulate virtual assets and virtual asset service providers, enhance asset recovery and ensure countries implement effective beneficial ownership rules.”
In her role, Ms Clerc will lead the FATF Secretariat, advise the FATF President and Vice-President and will be responsible to the FATF Plenary and FATF President.
She will also work closely with FATF’s 39 members and nine FATF-Style Regional Bodies, making up the FATF Global Network of over 200 countries and jurisdictions.
FATF says Ms Clerc will also work with other international bodies including the IMF, World Bank, UN, Egmont Group and G20, and will oversee the completion of the current cycle of FATF mutual evaluations.
Ms Clerc succeeds Vincent Schmoll who has served as Acting Executive Secretary at FATF since David Lewis’ departure in December 2021.
