NEWS: Exploitation of surrogacy and forced marriages now covered under updated EU anti-trafficking law

By Paul O’Donoghue

The exploitation of surrogacy, forced marriage and illegal adoption have been formally classified as forms of exploitation covered by the EU’s anti-trafficking law.

In a statement, the Council of the European Union said that the changes mean that knowingly using the service provided by one of the newly-defined trafficking victims will now “become a criminal offence that is punishable by effective, proportionate and dissuasive penalties”.
