A SHORTLIST of three candidates to lead Europe’s new AML Authority (AMLA) has been drawn up, MEPs revealed today.

The names have been sent to members of two of the parliament’s committees overseeing finance and justice affairs.

Sources in the European Parliament told AML Intelligence today that the shortlisted candidates are from the Netherlands, Italy and Germany.

All three candidates shortlisted – two men and a woman – went thru a series of interviews during the summer where they were assessed by senior European Commission officials and independent adjudicators.

MEPs will now organize informal hearings with the candidates based on which they will make their choice, sources said.

When Frankfurt was chosen as the location for AMLA headquarters many observers felt that the chair would go to a French candidate. However, sources in Brussels indicated that two of the leading contenders from France – both women – did not apply for the job.

MEPs meeting in Strasbourg this week are set to fix dates for the informal hearings with the three candidates.

The EU formally advertised for the AMLA chair position in June.

The role comes with a salary of approximately €290,000 per year, which is mostly tax-free and comes with other allowances.

Requirements for the job include the ability to speak two EU languages and at least five years of high-level management experience.

The position will be based in Frankfurt, which was earlier this year confirmed to be the home of the AMLA.

The EU also announced in September that it has started recruiting five executives to form AMLA’s board, alongside the chair.
